Calcium sulfate (or calcium sulphate) is the inorganic compound with the formula CaSO4 and related hydrates. In the form of γ-anhydrite (the anhydrous form), it is used as a desiccant. One particular hydrate is better known as plaster of Paris, and another occurs naturally as the mineral gypsum.
Calcium sulfate (CaO4S) anhydrous is a calcium salt that is used for a variety of purposes including: building materials, as a desiccant (drying agent), in dentistry as an impression material, cast, or die, and in medicine for immobilizing casts and as an inactive ingredient tablet excipient and color glaze.

Sodium Carbonate, Anhydrous is a water insoluble Sodium source that can easily be converted to other Sodium compounds, such as the oxide by heating (calcination). Carbonate compounds also give off carbon dioxide when treated with dilute acids. Sodium Carbonate is generally immediately available in most volumes.
It is used in the manufacture of detergents, soaps, and paper. Also used in the manufacture of water glass (sodium silicate), borax, sodium phosphate, and many other sodium compounds.
The purpose of adding sodium thiosulfate is to remove the excess iodine from the reaction mixture. This is important because iodine is a strong oxidizing agent and can cause side reactions with the organic compounds in the mixture.
